As shipping becomes increasingly digitalized, IT has moved from a support function to a critical part of daily vessel operations. Connectivity, cybersecurity, software management and data availability all play a role in ensuring safe and efficient operations at sea.

Onboard a vessel, connectivity impacts everything from operations and safety to crew wellbeing and the ability to work in a data-driven way. As reliance on data continues to grow, connectivity has become a strategic issue—not just for IT, but for operations, safety, and business development.

When the new Cybersecurity Act enters into force on 15 January 2026, both the requirements and the responsibility will be tightened. Cybersecurity will become a matter for executive management and the board – not just an IT issue. For shipowners and operators, this means that organisation, ways of working and IT environments must be reviewed, both onboard and ashore.
