46 Vessels Upgraded with High-speed Satellite Connectivity
Soya IT Marine Solutions has been entrusted with a major assignment: upgrading satellite communication on 46 ocean-going vessels. The delivery includes Starlink Maritime, strengthened cybersecurity, and 24/7 IT support — all designed to deliver reliable maritime connectivity that drives efficiency, safety, and crew welfare.
The customer wanted to improve the availability of data from their vessels and enable a more seamless and automated flow of information to ship managers ashore. To support real-time decision-making and more efficient operations, a stable and high-capacity connection was key.
From POC to Proven Value
The project began with three pilot installations (POC) that demonstrated the value of the solution: Starlink Maritime as the primary communication link, supported by additional satellite antennas for redundancy and uninterrupted service. This ensures high-speed, secure ship connectivity even in remote waters.
With data speeds up to 500–700 times faster, vessels now benefit from real-time data exchange, improved operational insight, and stronger support for digital workflows. The solution also enhances cybersecurity and enables secure, reliable communication — essential for digital operations, informed decisions, and improved crew welfare through better connectivity to home and shore-based services.
“Many solutions focus solely on connectivity, but leave a gap in cybersecurity. We’ve designed a setup where robust security measures are integrated into the very core of the communication system — not added afterwards. This approach ensures not only reliable communication, but also the level of protection required to support today’s highly digital and compliance-driven maritime operations, including risk management and regulatory compliance.” says Thomas Bergefall, Vice President at Soya IT Marine Solutions.
A Tight Schedule and Remote Installations to Avoid Vessel Downtime
The installation project has been intensive, requiring extensive logistics and precise time planning. Installation across 46 vessels is currently underway and expected to be completed this autumn, delivering the full rollout in less than six months. The installation concept is designed for maximum flexibility: all hardware — antennas and communication equipment — is shipped directly to the vessels at ports around the world.
The crew handles the physical installation onboard, while Soya IT Marine Solutions completes the configuration remotely. This approach eliminates downtime in port and significantly reduces costs and disruptions. Each vessel is secured with a three-year support agreement, guaranteeing continuous assistance and reliable maritime connectivity for years to come.
“Our solution is designed to be simple and flexible — without compromising on safety. Installation requires no downtime, saving both time and money. With the new communication solution, we’re enabling real-time data transfer and preparing our customer’s vessels for future digital developments. ” says Thomas.
A Growing Digital Footprint at Sea
With this delivery, Soya IT Marine Solutions now provides managed IT environments and secure ship connectivity to around 70 vessels. Our services cover system integration, satellite communication, cybersecurity, and ongoing support — empowering shipowners to unlock new opportunities, enhance operational efficiency, and safeguard crew welfare at sea.
“Our commitment is to deliver reliable, secure, and future-ready maritime IT solutions that empower shipowners to unlock new business opportunities and improve operational efficiency worldwide.” concludes Thomas.
