UME Customer Case

UME Shipping Future Proof its Vessel IT environment

UME Shipping AB, based in Stockholm with a strong presence in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, specializes in ship management and operates vessels focused on dry cargo and RoRo/passenger services. In 2023, UME entered into an agreement with SOYA IT Marine Solutions to enhance the onboard IT infrastructure and management of two of its vessels.

Recognizing the need for a robust and future-proof vessel IT environment, UME aimed to support functional growth and strengthen its sustainability initiatives. The assignment included the installation of a secure and compliant IT platform on the Wasa Express and Gubal Trader, which was completed by mid-May 2023, along with ongoing IT support.

Fast access to IT expertise, remote support, and IT management

“Partnering with SOYA IT Marine Solutions gives us access to a comprehensive IT service that ensures secure, efficient, and scalable onboard operations,” says Magnus Granander, Director of UME Shipping AB.

The collaboration gives UME Shipping fast access to enhanced cybersecurity, minimizes downtime, and improves digital resilience. The comprehensive IT solution supports daily operations and provides a scalable foundation for future technological advancements. The ability to manage IT remotely from SOYA’s office in Stockholm ensures high service availability and technical expertise, no matter where the vessels are located.

Connectivity at sea

Soya IT Marine Solutions also provided a Starlink satellite communication system. The installation was smooth, with clear instructions enabling the crew to adapt easily. Starlink has delivered high-speed internet with low latency across all vessels, although its services faced restrictions in Egypt and Saudi Arabia by the end of 2024. In response, Soya IT Marine Solution quickly implemented a new Rapid Connection router, and the team is evaluating the performance of this 4G/5G solution.

Renewed confidence in 2024

In March 2024, UME expanded its trust in Soya IT Marine Solution with the Alcudia Express, which also received a standardized IT platform, Starlink Maritime Solution, IT management, IP telephony, and CCTV.

“This is a great example of scalability. Standardizing the IT environment allows our customers to add more vessels quickly and easily as needed. It demonstrates a flexible and scalable solution that makes it easier for the company to adapt to changes and grow.” says Lars Johansson, Global Key Account Manager for Digital Shipping.

Through this strategic partnership, UME Shipping AB reinforces its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in maritime operations. The collaboration with Soya IT Marine Solutions marks an important step in UME’s digital transformation, establishing them as a forward-thinking and responsible shipping company.

A five year subscription based solution

Soya IT  Marine Solution offers a subscription solution. In this case UME has signed a five year agreement, meaning there are possibilities to enhance the collaboration even further.

“We look forward to deepening our collaboration and exploring further opportunities to enhance UME’s IT infrastructure and operational efficiency through this successful partnership,” says Lars Johansson, Global Key Account Manager for Digital Shipping.
